ASP Coding build Calendar

Hi anyone,
my question is I wish to use ASP coding to develop a calendar which allow my
user select specific date and enter the date into the SQL database
--
regards seowhuaAnd which part do you need help with?... the popup calendar, or inserting
into db, or capturing the value in ASP and passing to DAL? Please be more
specific.

ASP Calender...

Hi,
Can I know how can I build the calender. Normally a calender image will
shown besides the date text box. When we click on it,a calender will pop up
and if we select a value from it, the date will be inserted in the
corresponding text area.
TQ

AS2005 Projects best practice?

Hi,

I'm currently looking for the best practice to set-up my AS2005 projects. Any help would be appreciated.

We currently need to build a lot of cubes with AS2005 and we have a lot of AS2005 developers working on this... Here are some points to keep in mind:

    Cubes will share dimensions

Some cubes will have their exclusive dimension

multiple developers working at the same time on the projects

Here are my options:

Create one big project to hold all my cubes and dimensions

This is easy to set-up and manage

Might have some problems having multiple developers working at the same time

What if a dimension is used in multiple cubes but we need to define distinct hierarchies for every cube?

Create on project for the common objects (dimensions) and one project per cube

I have the feeling that this would be hard to manage

How can I link the dimensions from the common objects project to our different objects?

What happens if a developer modify a dimension in the common object project ? would all the cubes using it be automatically updated?

    Create one project per cube

This is easy to set-up and manage

Modifying a dimension may require to modify all projects (major overhead) if used in multiple cubes

What is your take on this and how do you guys manage your AS2005 projects?

TIA,

Aiwa

I would add

that you also need to think about DSV objects. Are those developed one time

before all dimensions and cubes are started being developed or even DSVs are

going to be incrementally developed?

Eventually, are those going to be deployed as part of one database?

Are you planning to do test driven development? Will your test development be

performed in parallel with the solution development? If yes, does it mean that

any incremental work done by one developer should result in fully deployable

solution for all the cubes as part of one database, which is going to be automatically

tested on regular basis?

Hi Andrew,

you are right I forgot DSV. Those should be developed before developing cubes and dimensions but change to DSV are likely to happen in the long run.

Deploying to one or more database is not a show stopper for us right now.

Yes, any incremental work done by one developer should result in a fully deployable solution.

Aiwa

Personally

i have never seen a group of people actively developing the same cube in

parallel and using a source control system. All files participating in the AS

project are in XML format. So it is possible to resolve conflicts using the

source control system you have. Some of the conflicts will be resolved

automatically. Some will have to be solved manually. But you need to make

experiments and see how it goes.

I think it

will be easier if different people work within the same project but each object

is changed only by one developer at the same time. For instance, today I would

work on dimension A and I know that nobody will touch A today. Tomorrow

somebody else could work on A but I will not. This would reduce the number of

conflicts.

Also, I do

not see big amount of manual work to do when designing a dimension or cube. The

work is mainly mental one. So, if resolution of conflicts becomes a problem

then it is possible for 2 or 3 developers make their local experiments and,

having tested locally and succeeded, get together in one room and combine their

efforts by recreating the object from the scratch while picking up the good

steps from each solution. Yes, one of the developers will have to repeat the

steps of 3 people once again, but it will not be mental work requiring a lot of

energy, but rather mechanic work.

I think you

need just try to follow your processes for a week and see how it goes.

AS/OLAP data with RS

Hi,
I'm totally new to reporting services (but worked with mdx/asy2k). Tried
today to build RS reports to an AS database. First, is it true you have to
make a whole mdx query (as in mdx sample application) to create the query
string/dataset ? No help or wizard ? Second, is there a way to get
drill-to-detail-functionality, either in the same list as a more detailed
level or in another list in the same report ?I assume you are asking for Analysis Services 2000 and Reporting Services
2000. Did you check the following MSDN article - it should get you started:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnsql2k/html/olapasandrs.asp
RS 2005 provides new graphical drag & drop MDX and DMX query designers when
connecting to a AS 2005 or AS 2000 cube. Please check this link for a screen
shot of the MDX query designer:

AS/400 DB2 and Analysis services

I am trying to build a cube.

The data is on the AS/400

I can make a successful connection and can see the table.

When I pull the tables in a Data Source View and try to make my own relationships,

there is no columns. In fact when I try to Explore data, it return an error:

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Can someone tell me how to resolve this?

Hi,

Can you please tell me if this happens with Analysis Services SP1 and using Microsoft's OleDB provider for DB2 (that is the only provider supported)? Also, in case you tried, does it work against UDB?

Hi,

Try to use the IBM Client Access ODBC Driver.

Regards, Christian

|||

Looks like I don have the proper version. I download the Microsoft OLEDB Provider for DB2.

Went to install it and got this:

Setup cannot continue because a supported version of SQL Server 2005 is not installed. Supported versions include Enterprise, Developer, or Enterprise Evaluation.

Thanks.

BTW I did try the IBM DB2 UDB version 5.x and that is what I was trying to use. Apparently, IBM has reported a bug. They working on it and it won't be available until the next fix. Whenever that will be.....

AS service hangs on cube build 'start'/ timeout on process cube

I apologize in advance for the duplication, I just found this forum and wanted to post my questions/concerns here. I had previously posted to the discussion group. If anyone has any advice, I would love to hear from you. We are struggling with performance issues, particularly with making changes to the cubes now that our warehouse has grown.

Thank you in advance,

~Shari

We have two apparent issues with Analysis Services (AS) as outlined below:

1. We have a rebuild of the nightly cube build and quite often the first step would hang (just run without processing). We would have to stop the job, restart Analysis Services and then start the job again, resulting in loss of processing time and an impact to our Production Reporting. As a workaround for this intermittent problem, we have adjusted the nightly job to include a stop and start of AS before the cube build begins. An outline of the current steps:

· net stop MSSQLServerOLAPService

· net start MSSQLServerOLAPService

· dtexec /DTS "\MSDB\SSAS_Full_Dim_Load_Prod" /SERVER serverName /MAXCONCURRENT " -1 " /CHECKPOINTING OFF/REPORTING V

· process cub files

· backup cube

We need to know why AS does not process cubes as it should from time to time.Do we have a configuration problem? Is our Production Server not sufficient enough for AS and the size of the cube?We have more than the minimum requirements but possibly we need more due to our expectation of the cubes and data.

CPU = Quad 2.8 GHz Intel Xeon (Hyper-Threaded)

Memory = 20476 MB

OS – Windows 2003. SP1

SQL Server 2005

64 bit based on the x64 platform

2. We have been unable to deploy a copy of the Production cubes to a new server. We even tried deploying a smaller cube, to include a large dimension (ex: Account). We continually experience time outs with the larger dimensions.

a. Tried deploying from Visual Studio 2005

b. Attempted to Process the cube through SQL Server Management Studio

c. Attempted to Process the larger dimension only from SQL Server Management Studio

d. Attempted Parallel processing, Sequential – One Transaction, and Sequential – Separate Transaction.

e. Also tried changing the default timeout for the AS server.ForceCommitTimeout property was 30000, increased to 40000 and then again to 50000

f. Attempted to change the ExternalCommandTimeout property from 3600 to 7200. This was successful in the Disaster Recovery server which has nothing running (no users reporting).Although it did take over 5 hours to process. At that rate, it might take 2 days to rebuild the large cube that we have, with several partitions.

Re: 1

I've seen a scenario where the service "pauses" while processing due to threading issues. When that happens, issuing an unrelated query on another session while processing is stalled can cause the processing job to resume. If you're seeing that behavior, there are some tuning parameters that might help. They're not settings I'd encourage randomly tweaking, though, so I'll hold off on making any recommendations until I hear back.

Re: 2

There are a lot of possible variables here, and the investigation might need to ge tpretty involved. I'd really recommend opening a support ticket to try to resolve that one.

|||

Brad,

Thanks for your post. We have not seen that an unrelated query will trigger processing, per se. Basically once it hangs, it hangs until it is forced to stop. And unfortunately our cube jobs run for about 4-5 hours at night and what might appear to be "processing" is really a hang and it is not realized until we come in the next morning and see that it is not finished yet. The drag is that we lost a process of that cube. As I mentioned, we have put a stop and start of the AS service in the job as a safety but I we feel like we shouldn't have to do this and are more interested in getting the parameters tuned so that AS runs without incident.

As for the second issue, yes my next step is a case with MS. I thought I would post here and see if I could hear from others who may have experienced similiar first.

Thanks again,

Shari

When you say it hangs, I assume you're seeing no CPU consumption or I/O, correct? Could you tell me what the query pool and processing pool busy and idle threads numbers are (under MSAS 2005: Threads in perfmon)?

Also, you say the CPUs support hyperthreading. Is HT actually enabled, such that it looks like 8 CPUs? I ask because it affects the size of the thread pools.
