ASP + SQL loads really slow over intranet

Hi guys,

I've created a web application using ASP together with SQL Server as
our db source, running through IIS 6 on a Winows Server 2003 platform.

This application retrieves a list of customer codes from our db, so
records returned could be as many as 2000+ for any single transaction.

The application runs fine for users from the same state. However, our
interstate colleagues have notice that it takes more than 3-4mins for
the page to load, while it only takes me < 2secs to load.

Our intranet server is located in the same state as I, so anyone from
within this state has no problems loading the page. All other states
are finding it unbearable.

I've done some debugging, and it appears to be a server factor.
I saved the page with the longest list to a local drive and opened it
locally in IE and it loads quickly.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to speed this application up
for our interstate users?
Any ideas would appreciated.

Thanks,
ShawnI would start by trying to identify the bottleneck - from what you've
said, it's not clear if this is an MSSQL issue. If I understand you,
both you and the other users are hitting the same IIS server, and
issuing the same queries, but they get the results slowly and you
don't. That could suggest that the delay is in serving the pages to the
remote users, not in retrieving the data from the database.

You can use the MSSQL Profiler to check the duration and execution plan
of your queries, to see if there's any difference depending on the user
requesting the data. If there is a difference, then hopefully the
execution plan will give you a clue as to where the problem is.

You might also want to post in an ASP/IIS group, if you haven't already
done so - many performance problems aren't due to only one issue, so
getting some ideas about how to investigate the other components of the
system would probably be useful.

Simon|||Hi Simon,

I did some debugging, and it took SQL Server the same about of time to
do complete the query for both local and interstate, and it's the
serving of the page that is definitely taking much longer on our
interstate servers.

Usually, most users would do a query that should return about 1000+
records, and than these records gets displayed into a table on the asp
page. The page (file size) itself is roughly around 110+kB, so it's not
exactly a BIG file to be tranferred. But then why the slow down?

Any advices/ideas on how to by-pass this problem?

Regards,
Shawn

No idea, unfortunately. Since the problem seems to be serving the pages,
you'll probably get better assistance in an IIS/ASP group.

ASP + SQL Loads Really Slow Over Intranet

Thanks,
ShawnHi
Returning 2000+ customer codes and putting it into a dropdown will make any
application unbearable. How do you find what you are looking for with a drop
down like that?
How are you retrieving the codes, a select * from ...or a select CustomerID
from ...?
Make sure you are not doing any data binding.
If the application is fast in the local state, it means that SQL Server does
all it's work in under 2 seconds, no matter what state, and then pushing the
resultant web page over the wire is your performance bottleneck. How big is
the resultant page? Anything more than 100Kb is generally considered bad.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that I'm putting all the records
into a drop-down list, coz all I'm doing is just puting it into a
table.
I forgot to mention that to retrieve the records, I call a stored
procedure that does this:
"select fldCustCode, fldCustName (etc..)
from tbCust
where fldCustCode = @.custcode"
I think you might be right about the bottleneck being it has to send
the page back over the network.
I did a quick check, and the file size is just a little over 110+kB.
Is there anyway I can get around this?
Somehow I can reduce/compress the file size while it gets sent over the
network? (if thats even possible)

Shawn

Large tables are really noticeable when the bottleneck is the connection -
until the end table tag is received IE won't show anything. If you remove
the table tags for testing and just show plain text, you'll probably find
those users start seeing data almost immediately. Still, 110kB isn't much -
are you sure it's not 1.1MB? I've got a table displayed in my browser right
now with only a menu system, 6 columns (and mostly numbers in each of
those), and for around 100 rows that's 160kB. This page shows up on my home
PC in around 4-5 secs over a 512kbps ADSL line. I guess if your users have
dialup then it might take a few mins, but anything faster shouldn't.

If you don't need all the data to be seen at once is to use paging - show
say 100 per page, with clickable page numbers to get other records.
If the data doesn't need to look nice you could look at pre tags and fixed
width spacing of lines.
If both ends support gzip compression then it's possible I guess.
Dan|||Hi Daniel,
The file is definitely 110+kB and not 1.1Mb, I wouldn't miss such a big
difference.
The asp page itself is pretty simple, it doesn't contain any menu(s) or
any images, it only contains two buttons and a table consisting of 8
columns and over 1000+ rows (each with some short text and small
numbers).
I still gotta find out how fast our interstate connections are, but
it's definitely not dial-up.
I'll keep trying ... but keep the suggestions coming!

OK, I was just wondering as my HTML is quite large (I guess due to using
links and having a number of columns with around 50 characters each per
row). A basic table with 1000 rows, 8 columns, and 1 character per column is
around 90kB.

As your earlier posts state that the page comes up immediately for yourself
for the same data, then the bottleneck has to be something that's between
the other states and your server that your PC doesn't go through. Could be a
router or firewall somewhere in the path that's overloaded and is passing
data really slowly. Have you tried a traceroute from some of these locations
to your server to see what the response times are like from each router in
the path?
Dan|||some other things you might want to take a look at a well...
How often is the clients cache cleared?
Stylesheets...how big are the stylesheets being used?
Scripts .... are they set to "DEFER" correctly?

AS2005: Replacing the sole data source for existing cube?

Does BI Dev Studio support (and if so, how) replacing the sole data source for an existing cube with a new data source? As a note, this new data source is really an enhanced version of the original, but with added fields, stored procedures, etc. I imagine that, if I can do what I'm asking about above, then the DSV Refresh function will either automate, or at least document, the changes needed at DSV level to keep the cube connection valid.

Question restated: DoesBI Dev Studio support (and if so, how) replacing the sole data source for an existing AS2005 cube with a new data source?

The best way to change the source of data for an existing OLAP or Data Mining object is simply to change the connection string of the Data Source object on which that object depends. After doing this, you may want to refresh the Data Source View object to confirm that the new relational source contains equivalent tables. (Right-click on the background of the DSV and choose the Refresh menu item.)

The connection string of Data Source objects is configuration dependent. This is handy as it allows you to have a single Data Source that will use one connection string when your project is in “Test” configuration and another connection string when it is in “Production” configuration. Click on the Properties menu item in the Project menu to see the active configuration and use the “Configuration Manager” button to create new configurations.

It also is possible to change the primary Data Source of a Data Source View by setting the Data Source property in the property panel.(Edit the DSV and click the background of the diagram to ensure that the DSV itself is selected.)However, changing the primary Data Source only changes the default Data Source for new tables added to the DSV.Since Data Source Views support tables from multiple Data Sources, each table already included in the DSV is associated with a specific Data Source. To change the Data Source for tables already in the DSV, you need to is replace each of the tables with an equivalent table from the Data Source of your choice (Right click on a table and choose Replace Table->With Other Table…).

AS/400 Linked Server Error

Hello,
I have installed IBM AS/400 Client Access on my machine and then added a new
ODBC Data Source.
I have been working with this ODBC connection on several DTS packages and
everything has worked just fine.
Right now, I need to access some information on my AS/400 server from
several stored procedures on my SQL Server. I already configured a Linked
Server to the AS/400 server using the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC
Driver.
When I click the Tables folder under the new linked server, I can browse
through all the tables on the 400 Database. But when I execute any query
(using OPENQUERY or 4-part names in a normal query) I get the following error:
*******************************************+++
Server: Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
OLE DB provider 'MSDASQL' reported an error.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: [IBM][Client Access Express ODBC Driver
(32 bits)] Driver not capable.]
OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'MSDASQL' IRowset::GetNextRows returned
0x80004005: ].
******************************************
Why is this happening? What is the error? Is there anything I am doing
wrong? I have been "fighting" with this problem for several hours.
Thanks a lot, in advance, for all the help you can give me.
is your ib client access the most updated version?

AS/400 DB2 and Analysis services

I am trying to build a cube.

The data is on the AS/400

I can make a successful connection and can see the table.

When I pull the tables in a Data Source View and try to make my own relationships,

there is no columns. In fact when I try to Explore data, it return an error:

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Can someone tell me how to resolve this?

Hi,

Can you please tell me if this happens with Analysis Services SP1 and using Microsoft's OleDB provider for DB2 (that is the only provider supported)? Also, in case you tried, does it work against UDB?

Hi,

Try to use the IBM Client Access ODBC Driver.

Regards, Christian

Looks like I don have the proper version. I download the Microsoft OLEDB Provider for DB2.

Went to install it and got this:

Setup cannot continue because a supported version of SQL Server 2005 is not installed. Supported versions include Enterprise, Developer, or Enterprise Evaluation.

Thanks.

BTW I did try the IBM DB2 UDB version 5.x and that is what I was trying to use. Apparently, IBM has reported a bug. They working on it and it won't be available until the next fix. Whenever that will be.....

AS 2005 - errors after password change

Hello all

I changed the password that I use in AS 2005 to connect to my SQL Server database. I changed it in the data source, so when I go into the connection there, I can
connect properly (when I click the Edit button for the Connection
String, and then hit Test Connection).

However, when I go to a dimension, and try to process it, I get the
error:

OLE DB error: OLE DB or ODBC error: Login failed for user
'[MyUserName]'.; 42000.

Errors in the high-level relational engine. A connection could not be
made to the data source with the DataSourceID of '[MyDatabaseName]',
Name of '[MyDatabaseName]'.

I've tried all the ImpersonationInfo options - use specific name and
password, use service account, credentials of the current user, and
default. When I use the "specific name and password", it never saves the
password information.

Also, in the Connection Manager, under SQL Server Authentication, it
has an option to save password. It also NEVER saves the password in
there. So, when I first input my login, password info, and hit 'test
connection', it succeeds. Then, when I click ok, then shut down the
Data Sources properties, and then reopen it, the password has
disappeared.

What am I doing wrong? Where else do I need to change the password?

Thanks,
Sylvia

You are doing nothing wrong.

More to it, Analysis Server does saves your password as soon as you deploy your solution to the server. The problem is with securtiy.

Once you've provided your password to SQL Management Studio and you saved your datasource definition, Analysis Server saves the password in the encrypted form. But to adhere to highest stadards of security, Analysis Server will never send password out. And even if SQL Management studio will try to display datasource dialog for you, Analysis Server will provide SSMS with all data source properites but not real user password.

So for you it should be simple matter of editing data source in the SQL Management studio, saving it and trying to process your dimension or partition.

Thank you very much for your reply.

I'm not quite following what I need to do here, in order to be able to process my dimesions and cubes.

I've gone into the SQL Management Studio, into the one data source I have, gone into Properties, edited the Connection String by clicking the three dots. That brings up the Connection Manager. This is where I choose SQL Server authentication, put in a user name and password, and then click Test Connection, which always succeeds. I click OK once for Connection Manager, OK again on the Data Source properties. There's no option to save that I can see.

Then, when I do the same thing again, the password is blank, and I cannot connect without retyping it. And, I cannot process a dimension. I'm almost certain I used to get the failure that was something like "password incorrect for login (mylogin), but now I'm getting the following:

Errors and Warnings from Response
The following system error occurred: The parameter is incorrect. .
Errors in the high-level relational engine. A connection could not be made to the data source with the DataSourceID of 'XXX', Name of 'XXXX'.
Errors in the OLAP storage engine: An error occurred while the dimension, with the ID of 'DashboardNew', Name of 'XXXX 'was being processed.
thanks,

FYI - this is from a database migrated from AS 2000.

In Microsoft Visual Studio, I get this error:

The following system error occurred: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. .
Errors in the high-level relational engine. A connection could not be made to the data source with the DataSourceID of 'XXXX' , Name of 'XXXX' .
Errors in the OLAP storage engine: An error occurred while the dimension, with the ID of 'XXXX , Name of 'XXXX' was being processed.

Where else to I need to save connection information? This worked previously, it's just after I changed the SQL Server login password that I'm getting errors.

Couple of simple ways to deal with the problem;

1. Use Windows authentication in SQL Server

2. If you cant: Script your data source object in SQL Management studio and enter username and password for the connection there and send script back to the server.

Thanks Edward.

For the second step, could you be pls bit more clear as i am new to this IDE.

Does it mean that i need to create a Data Source first in Sql Server 2005 Analysis service and then use the generated script in BI management studio?

Thanks,

Kushal

No problem.

After you've created your project in BI Dev Studio and tried to deploy, the database has been created in Analysis Server.

Open SQL Management studio.
Connect to Analysis Server.
Navigate to your data source
Right click menu->Script Data Source As->Alter To->New Query Editor Window.
In the script that appears you can modify connection sting to contain username and password of your choice.

Hello. Are Analysis Services and the database on the same machine? If so you can try to change the account that you are running these services under to a new local account, that you will have to create on this machine.

If it is you laptop and not a production installation you can set this account with password never expires and add it to your local admin group. Change each services account to this account and repeat the password.

After this switch you should be able to use Windows Integrated security in your connections. It will not work if you will need to connect to other services on other machines/servers.

I am not sure that it will work but give it a try.
