ASP Page to run a Report

I am trying to create a report (form) to run from an ASP page with one
single prompt. The ASP pagre would then populate the parameter below
as it passes the data to Report Manager. I am tring to skip the step
of opening IE and go straight to the PDF.
Example
Enter Shipment# [2022222]
[Sumbit] [Quit]
shipnum=variable above
http://rpt-serv/ReportServer?/sales%2fC+of+C&shipnum=2022222&rs:Format=PDF
Does anyone have a sample ASP page they would be willing to share?
Thanks
BobThis may be way more than what you need, but search this newsgroup for my
post on 12/11/07 with the terms "Classic ASP" or Google ""Reporting Service
in Classic ASP" to do exactly what I think you want. Once the PDF is
rendered you can open it in IE, save it, or save it directly as a file on a
server (by taking the stream and writing it).

ASP Memory Crash

Hi all,
I am running reporting services on a dedicated server with 2GB of memory,
when ever a report is run that contains over 90,000 records the server
crashes and restarts. We have looked at the reports, and are to reduce the
criteria range to make smaller reports, but it then affects role the system
was designed to play in my organisation. If anyone has come across these
memory crashes and come across any ways of resolving them or ways that
haven't resolved them, including an increase in the memory size, it would be
greatly appreciated if you could reply. We are willing and able to throw
another 2GB at the problem, but are concerned this may only be a short term
solution and the problem will reoccur when the reporting size reaches 180,000
records.
Any assistance you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciatedIf you mean that the result set has 90,000 records or 180,000 records then
you have the wrong product. RS is not designed to generate reports that are
1500+ pages. Rendering is done in RAM so there is a direct correlation to
between number of records and the amount of RAM used. If the rendering
output is Excel or PDF then the amount of RAM consumed is even more. If the
destination is another program then there are better ways to do this. I know
that sometimes people are wanting to get a large amount of rows into Excel
for further analysis but it would be better to be using DTS and getting the
data out in CSV for them. Much much faster process.
If the output is not that many records but you have that many because you
are using filters then try to move away from filters. Filters brings over
all the data and then filters it. Use a query parameter instead.

Thanks for your responses.
Do you know if there is away to detect if the report is going to generate
over 200 pages and return a message to the user to say something like 'This
report may crash the server, are you sure you want to continue' ? From your
responses, and others I have read about memory, and RS limitations are the
only issue I am encountering, not programming issues, so if we confirm with
users before they run large reports it could solve our problems, unless they
select 'Yes' of course.
Any further assistance you may be able to provide would be greatly
appreciated.

provides the appropriate message and link. You can hide the real report from
the user in list view so they have to go through this. Also you could use
jump to url and render to Excel.

We are having a problem in listing subscriptions in Report manager and
getting "OutOfMemory" exception.
Our Application has an event-based subscription management system, and
every-time an event gets fired on the Application-side, it creates an
one-off subscription on the Reporting Services. So overtime the number of
Subscriptions created on the reporting services has grown, and a particular
report has about 8000+ subscriptions to date now.
So when we try to manage the subscriptions (try to delete the irrelevant
ones) in the RS "Report Manager", for that particular report, System gives
an OutOfMemory exception. I think Report Manager Calls internally
"ListSubscriptions" method (as explained in 840709) and couldn't cope up
with.
And i looked at MSDN Knowledgebase Article:840709, and increased the
"MemoryLimit" setting in RSReportServer.config, but there was no use.
By the way our Server has 2GB of RAM and we use Custom Authentication on
Reporting Services.
I posted this question here, because I thought the problem is similar to
what you were talking (Memory management Issue).
Any Suggestions are appreciated.
Regards
Raj Chidipudi

15 minutes to render and end user gets frustrated and he tries to "End Task"
the browser - every thing hangs up. I can't put drill down, etc., so that
is not my option. Is there any way I can stream data, instead of wait to
retreive all rows from SQL? - just like SQL Query analyzer window - it starts
producing results as soon as you execute the query. This is really a big
issue in our organization. Because of this, people started to hate RS. I
need some kind of solution asap. Please help.

ASP and Crystal report

Hi

Can u please help me out in this problem. Thanking u in advanced.

Development Environament:
I am using Crystal Report 9.0 Professional edition, I have IIS (v5.1) and Intenet Explorer (v6.0) install on my machine.

Problem:
I have downloaded the sample from crystal report site for crystal report 9.0 version but it is not working at all, it is just displaying the gray shade frame in the browser whenever i try to run the asp page. Why?
I read somewhere that i need to have Developer ot Enterprise edition beacause Professional edition does not support Web report and RDC. Is it so?
If not then can u just help me out in this? Can u give me the steps that i might have to carry in setting up the IIS server and Internet Explorer?

Thanking u again.

Bye
BhalchandraHi,

I'm using CR Profession Edition 9.2. Used the same example given in their web site. I used SmartViewer ActiveX Viewer in my asp page. Initially I got the same problem as yours.

Then only I knew that, if your client machine already having crviewer9.dll, then the report won't display. So try with a machine where this file is not already registered. Ohterwise unregister crviewer9.dll then try again.

Hope this will work.

ASP 1.1 & Report Server Login Problems

Hello everyone

we're having some strage trouble concerning ASP 1.1 and reporting services. We use a ASP 1.1 solution in which we authenticate Users using a self-written Login Mask. One page of the project consists of a report which is provided by report server. now, after displaying this report once, all other ASP 1.1 Forms do not work anymore, they simply keep empty.

My guess is that while conecting to the report server, an athenticated connection is established and kept up, even if the report is closed again.

thanks for any help

I'd have to see it to believe it. Can you post a screenshot of what you are seeing? If not, then can you describe the situation a bit further. The problem description appears to be much too general.

ASP + reporting services

I want create a handle on an ASPX page for emailing a report that was created with SQL reporting services.

can someone please help me out.
thanks!Edit: Sorry! Gotta watch which link I'm hitting!!

asking for user's input before report generation - plz help?

Hi guys,
I am very new to Rep Services so need your help or suggestion:
Question: Let's say I have a very simple set of data, but before the
report is generated, userviewing the report has to enter a number and
then the report takes this number and subtracts from it a number
sitting in the database - and displayes the result in the report.
Let me explain. Let's say here's my data:
Item Bill
1 $30
2 $50
3 $45
Before the report is generated, a popup will come up, asking the user
to input a Total Bill on Paper Invoice $.
Then the report will show:
Internal Total: $125 (this is the number calculated from the data
table.
Total Bill on the Paper Invoice: $130 (this is the number that the
report viewer inputted)
TOTAL AMOUNT DUE: ($130) - ($125) = $5 (this is the difference
between user's inputted number and the number from the table.
How would I create a report such as the above so that prior to report
generating, a popup would come up asking for the user to input $130 and
then the report would take the difference between user's input number
and the number sitting in the database table?
This should be very easy, but since I'm so new, I need your help.
Thanks in advance. The HTML report header can't pop-up a window to prompt users for input but
you can use a parameter that will show-up in the header toolbar. Add a
report parameter and then reference it in an expression as (textbox value)
=Parameters!TotalBill.Value-Fields!InternalTotal.Value

run the MDX, could you see the correct results?
It seems you custom the data processing extension. Is this true and how you
perform this customization?

AS/400 Parameters

Connected to AS/400 server through ODBC. Can submit queries, just built a matrix report, looks good.

However I want to incorporate a Parameter and have tried prefacing the parameter COSTCENTER with everything under the sun:

@.COSTCENTER (SQL Server version of parameter declaration)

:COSTCENTER (Oralce version of parameter declaration)

%COSTCENTER

#COSTCENTER

etc. etc.

I keep getting the same error:

Error in WHERE clause near '@.'. Unable to parse query text.

My inquiries are as follows:

1. Can you use parameters with an AS/400 connection?

2. If yes, howshould the parameter be declared?

I searched BOL, GOOGLE, so far nothing...

Which ODBC driver are you using?

AS Cube as DataSet for RS Multi-Value & Range Parameters?

Platform: All SQL '05 Std

I'm struggling with two issues involving the use of AS Cube data as parameters in a SSRS Report.

Background: I've built a report exclusively using an AS cube as it's data source, including the source for multi-value and range parameters. As a note, the cube is complex and at least one of the dimensions is large (~10,000 attribute values). Lastly, the date field being used is a "date time" datatype (more on this in a moment).

The two issues are...

(1) Even after initial caching (both in VS and as deployed to Report Mgr), the entry of all parameter values suffers long delays (~40 seconds) during apparent data refreshing of tyhe small dimensions, and > 60 seconds for the large dimension, in the parameter list. If possible for the large dimension, I'd like to create a separate lookup table for the large dimension, but it does not look straightforward when my data source is the OLAP cube. QUESTION: Is this possible to do, and/or is there a better way?

(2) My date dimension field that records the actual date (ig. yyyy-mm-dd) also contains, as a date-time datatype field, the HH:MM:SS values (hh:mm:ss is all zero's, by the way). In other words, the values look like yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss . Anyway, SSRS is throwing an error on the " : " (colon) symbols. Of course, if this field were being used as an output field, I could just change the field format in SSRS, but it's not output, it's an input parameter, and I don't know how it's possible to alter formatting on such a field. In the VS preview, the following error appers...

"An error occurred during local report processing. An error has occurred during report processing. Query execution failed for data set "FromDimSvcDateFullDate". Range operator (:) operands have different levels; they must be the same"

QUESTIONS: (a) Is it possible, either in SSAS or in SSRS, to alter formatting on the date field to remove the hh:mm:ss info? (b) What other solutions are suggested here?

Note: If I have to go back to my source data and change the data type, I'm afraid that my OLAP report (and others) will no longer function.

Note: Nobody on the SSRS thread is apparently able to provide feedback on this SSAS / SSRS issue.

(1): To isolate whether the delays are occurring in MSAS, the report (or both), you can trace MDX query execution times for SSAS by using SQL Profiler. If some of the MDX parameter queries are taking too long, maybe those could be tuned.

(2): What does the MDX query for the FromDimSvcDateFullDate data set look like - typically, there will be calculated measures defined, like ParameterCaption and ParameterValue? You should then be able to edit the definition appropriately to customize the data returned, using theVBA data coversion functions supported in MDX.

|||

The reason you were getting this error:

"An error occurred during local report processing. An error has occurred during report processing. Query execution failed for data set "FromDimSvcDateFullDate". Range operator (:) operands have different levels; they must be the same"

is most likely because you picked different Levels of dates for the FROM and TO in reporting service: Ie: "2004Q1" and "2006". It should have nothing to do with the colons in the dates. Picking 2004-01-01 00:00:00 to 2004-01-03 00:00:00 doesn't render an error.

I found this post when I was looking for a clean way around this or a way to give the user a more friendly message in this case... I'm still looking though :)

Array was not long enough. Check destIndex and length, and the array's lower bounds

When I try to export a report via Excel, I get an error of :

"Array was not long enough. Check destIndex and length, and the array's lower bounds."

Is this because the cell within Excel contains too many characters? There are two detail bands which could contain several pages worth of text.

I can export fine in HTML or PDF.

Thanks!

Hello,

We fix some problems with long text values in excel renderer and a hotfix is avaialble for RS2000 SP2.

Thank you,

Nico

|||

Nicoleta,

We already installed that SP2 since we were missing the printer icon when we first tried running the reports.

Is there a way to actually see which SP is on the server?

I tried looking at the Add / Remove Programs, and didn't see anything.

Thanks!

array

hi,
I am having problem with inserting the progress data
to crystal report.
I am using Progress Database with Merant Progress SQL
driver. In my db, I have a table with a field defined
as extent 5.
it has the following values: 12 23 345 12 23. When I
place the field on the crystal report it displays
"12233451223". How am I suppose to make CR to display
every value seperately.
thanks in advance.

fatihadd command in the CR like this

select
( "PUB"."salesrep"."RepName" ) As Name,
( "PUB"."salesrep"."Region" ) As Region,
( PRO_ELEMENT("PUB"."salesrep"."MonthQuota",1,1) ) As January,
( PRO_ELEMENT("PUB"."salesrep"."MonthQuota",2,2) ) As February
FROM "PUB"."salesrep"

and than in the CR design drop field

name region January February

thanks all

We are creating a report that we view detail records and find a row in the
list of records and want to grab one of the fields associated with that
record.
Example:
I have a loan number and principle balance.
I count the number of loans for a borrower.
Here is the data:
LN NUM Prin
1 5.00
2 10.00
3 15.00
The middle record is the one I want to use. But what I want as well is the
prin amount. How do I tell a function to look at the prin amount instead of
the ln num field?Hi Susan,
I've run into a similar issue. Were you able to resolve your issue? If so
please tell.
THanks,

the report in Crystal.

Arrange Items in Solution Explorer

Can the items, i.e. reports within the SSRS Report Designer Solution Explorer be arranged in a custom manner instead of being sorted alphabetically only?

Hi.

The reports in the solution explorer are ordered alphabetically when you open a solution/project; when you add them to an open solution/project they tend to be added just to the end.

I dont know of any way to change the default ordering, but as workaround you could just add a number prefix to the title of each report (e.g. 01-This report is top.rdl, 02-Another report.rdl etc.) so they are ordered in the way you want.

Hope this helps,

Gary.

|||Hi Gary,

Thanks for the reply.

I really want to avoid changing the report object names. Perhaps I will just leave it for now since it is just a cosmetical issue anyway.

Thanks again.

Kenny

Arithmetic operator

I'm using Sql Server reporting tools and creating a report.
How can I display the difference of two fields on a report?

you have 3 text boxes on a form..

say you have two fields...

textbox1.value = fields!myfield1.value

textbox2.value = fields!myfield2.value

then in the value for textbox3 put

= fields!myfield1.value - fields!myfield2.value

Arial Narrow not working in .pdf

I'm trying to create a report using Arial Narrow with bold, italics and
underline and the font just isn't showing up in .pdf (I'm getting a different
font). I've installed (and rebooted) the four Arial Narrow fonts that came
with MS Office to the Report Server and I'm still not having any luck. Any
advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!Do you also have Arial Narrow installed on the pc you open the PDF on? Since
RepSvcs cannot embed fonts in PDF documents, you need to have the font
installed both on the server and wherever you open the PDF.
You could also try redeploying the reports after installing the fonts, just
in case.
If none of this helps, you might be having the same problem as I'm having at
the moment. I have Gill Sans installed on the server, but for some reason
RepSvcs keeps reverting to MS Sans Serif when rendering the PDF.
